Susan Royal, Professor of Flute at the School of Music, performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic on tour in Florida in March. The five critically acclaimed concerts in Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, Vero Beach, Sarasota and Gainesville were conducted by JoAnn Falletta.
Dr. Royal also performed with the orchestra on all their Classics concerts in September and October, which were also conducted by JoAnn Falletta, while the principal flutist was absent on maternity leave.
Dr. Royal’s CD, The New Lyric Flute, released on Centaur Records in April 2008, showcases works written for flute since 2000, two commissioned especially for this project, and includes collaborations for guitar, piano, oboe, cello and harp. The album has received praise from The American Record Guide, the Flutist Quarterly of the National Flute Association, Flute Talk of the Instrumentalist, and the Niagara Frontier Flute Association, and it has aired on radio stations in the US and abroad.
In the summer of ‘09, the Royal-Piokowski Duo performed in Europe, as well as in Puerto Rico last spring. Other notable performances by Dr. Royal this academic year include a concerto, together with Dr. Sarah Hamilton and Ms. Laura Koepke, with the chamber orchestra of a work by Finko, and numerous concerts with the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet and various faculty ensembles.
