FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The national coaching track and field and cross country certified the academic successes of one Fredonia team and three individual student-athletes earlier this summer.
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association cited the Fredonia women's track team for its combined 3.30 grade-point average, resulting in a place on the All-Academic Team list. Two of the team members, Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown/Jamestown) and Anneliese Bienko (Clarence/Clarence), received USTFCCCA All-Academic awards.
Both women as well as men's team member Justyn Haines (Albion/Albion), who also named USTFCCCA All-Academic, carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or better and finished the regular season ranked in a national top-50 list in an individual event. All three made those lists during the outdoor season: Capestrani in the women's pole vault (11 feet, 8.5 inches), Bienko in the women's discus (137 feet, 6 inches), and Haines in the men's pole vault (15 feet, 3.5 inches).
Capestrani is an Early Childhood/Childhood Education major and a Math Instruction minor. She is the daughter of Cindy and Pierre Capestrani. Bienko, the daughter of Karen and Michael Bienko, is majoring in Social Work with minors in Psychology and Women and Gender Studies. Haines majors in Criminal Justice, minors in Sociology, and is the son of Heidi and Jake Haines.
All three Blue Devils are entering their senior year.
