The Fredonia for St. Jude club will host its fourth annual Up ‘Til Dawn event on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 4 to 9 p.m. in Steele Hall.
Up ‘Til Sawn is a letter-writing event, where participants are asked to fill pre-written donation letters for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. with the names and addresses of family and friends. The goal is to raise $25, 000 from the 10,000 pre-written letters that have been ordered. If a participant brings 50 names or more, they will be entered to win a $200 Visa gift card, and for every five letters, they will receive a raffle ticket.
“We need to make sure that students put forth good efforts in writing these letters to family and friends”, said Meagan Allers, President of Fredonia for St. Jude. “Each year St. Jude has tens of thousands of letters returned to the hospital due to incorrect address”.
The theme for this year, “Cancer is a Beach”, will feature an awareness week that will highlight the group’s goal of making this a continued success. The club will be giving away various beach themed giveaways through this week to promote the cause of Up ‘Til Dawn.
The event will be hosting a limbo and chicken-wing eating contest, along will performances for the Cheerleading, Dance, Hip-Hop, and Step teams.
In past years Up ‘Til Dawn have been held on Fridays, till the decision was made to move it to a Sunday. “There are many events on campus that happen on Friday and Saturday nights, and we wanted to find a time where we can have our largest turnout ever” said Allers.
In 2010, 150 students and faculty attended the event. Thus far, 340 students from 26 different organizations have registered online to attend.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital works to find cures and save children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization.
Students wishing to serve as letter writers must register online. For more information, please contact Meagan Allers.
Fredonia for St. Jude, the student group sponsoring the event, invites all students and faculty to the event. Admission is free.
