Dr. Jeffrey Allen Tucker, Associate Professor of English at the University of Rochester, will speak about how race influences science fiction on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 4:30 p.m. in room S-121 of the Williams Center.

The talk entitled, “The Necessity of Models, of Alternatives: Samuel Delany’s Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand” explores how we define science fiction and what difference race makes to science fiction. Tucker, who is considered one the nation’s leading authorities on author Samuel Delany, will examine Delany’s book, Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand (1984) and how it demonstrates that science fiction is a necessity for contemporary African-American scholarly examination.

Dr. Tucker, who holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University, will also discuss how both Delany’s own identity and the social phenomenon of race that has structured so much of the American experience influenced the author’s conception of science fiction.

The presentation is free and open to the public.
