Two SUNY Fredonia professors -- Dr. Icial VanWesenbeeck, English, and Jonathan Chausovsky, Political Science -- will attend a summer Council for International Educational Exchange faculty development seminar as winners of SUNY Fredonia’s own International Faculty Development Seminar competition.
VanWesenbeeck will attend “Middle Eastern Women: Tradition, Development, and Change” in Jordan. The seminar will explore the dynamic roles of women in contemporary Arab society and focus on the challenges and achievements of Jordanian women leaders. The current director of the Women’s Studies Program, VanWesenbeeck teaches a course in Middle Eastern literature and has done extensive research in Middle Eastern literature and gender studies.
Chausovsky will attend “Economic Development and Urban Transformation in China.” Topics to be addressed at the seminar include current economic and political relations between the United States and China, domestic challenges of migration and displacement, cultural preservation and social transformation, and urban planning for sustainability. Chausovsky plans to use knowledge gained at the seminar to further his teaching in courses, such as Civil Liberties and Constitutional law, and in research on the development of the legal rights of
business corporations.
The many applications submitted to the annual competition were evaluated on the seminar’s potential impact on the professor’s teaching and scholarship as well as benefits to SUNY Fredonia.
