On Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall, the Fredonia Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, will feature a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael Colgrass and noted bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson.
In addition to “Winds of Nagual,” and “Old Churches,” composed by Mr. Colgrass, the concert repertoire will include Holst's Second Suite in F, “The Promise of Living" from "The Tender Land" by Copland/Singleton, and Wilson's "Avatar," featuring Jackson on the bassoon.
Colgrass will discuss his work, “Winds of Nagual” at the Saturday evening concert. His appearance on campus and residency is sponsored by the Percussion Guild, Woodwind Association and Conductor's Guild, all Student Association organizations, the Fredonia School of Music and a grant from the 2014 - 2015 Convocation Series.
Colgrass’ extensive musical career as a performer, composer and author spans over seven decades. His expertise includes jazz performance, composing for orchestras, chamber groups, choral groups and soloists as well as writing music education method and technique books.
In 1978, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “Déjà vu,” which was commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic. In addition, he received an Emmy Award in 1982 for a PBS documentary “Soundings: The Music of Michael Colgrass,” two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Grant, First Prize in the Barlow and Sudler International Wind Ensemble Competition and the 1988 Jules Leger Prize for Chamber Music.
Ms. Jackson will be the featured guest artist at Fredonia’s Double Reed Day.
