"Women's Rights as Human Rights" is the theme of Women's History Month 2009, being observed at SUNY Fredonia via a slate of activities -- all of which are free and open to the public -- organized by the Women's Student Union and Women's Studies Program.
Women's History Month Events
A dinner and keynote speaker will launch Women's History Month on Wednesday, March 4, when leading feminist Wyndi Anderson gives the talk during dinner in the Williams Center Horizon Room on "US Weekly, Starbucks, and "Starbabies." The event starts at 6 p.m., and no advanced registration is required.
On Tuesday, March 10, the prize-winning HBO film, "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo," will be shown at 8 p.m. in Jewett Hall Room 101. A letter-writing campaign will be undertaken.
Women's Studies Research Conference
The Women's Studies Student Research Conference will take place with dinner and presentations by award-winning student researchers in the Horizon Room of the Williams Center on Wednesday, March 25, from 5 to 7 p.m..
The keynote speaker will be University of Pittsburgh Professor Amanda Godley, whose talk is entitled, " She’s Just a Salesman’s Wife”: High School Students’ Talk about Women’s Labor and Women’s Rights in American Literature."
Welfare reform and health
Dr. Anahi Viladrich will give a talk on Friday, March 27 at 2 p.m. in Williams Center Room S104 entitled, "Immigrant Women and Access to Health Care: The Legacy of Welfare Reform and the Struggle for Health-Related Rights." Dr. Viladrich is director of the Immigration and Health Initiative at Hunter College.
Human trafficking workshop and panel
"Recognizing Human Trafficking in Chautauqua County" is a three-hour workshop to be presented by the International Institute of Buffalo on Monday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the Horizon Room, Williams Center.
It will be followed by a panel presentation starting at 6 p.m. in Fenton Hall Room 105 featuring Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis who will discuss "The Violation of Women's Rights: A call for an Interdisciplinary Response to Violence Against Women" and Amy Fleischauer, whose topic is "Human Trafficking in Western New York: Is It Happening Here?"
Lastly, the Saakumu Dance Troupe is scheduled to perform on Tuesday, March 31 (info to come).
