The Women’s Studies and Journalism Departments are presenting an archived webcast with New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof on Monday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in 101 Jewett Hall.
The webcast, titled, “Half the Sky,” is based on Kristof’s recent book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which he co-authored with Sheryl WuDunn. The book conveys that the key to economic progress lies in tapping the potential of half the developing world’s resources: women. The authors state that the best way to fight poverty and extremism is to educate and empower women and girls.
The lecture focuses specifically on sex trafficking and women’s reproductive health rights. It will include stories of women from all over the world whose lives are deeply affected by these issues.
Following the webcast, journalism professor Elmer Ploetz and women’s studies professor Ingrid Johnston-Robledo, will lead a discussion about the lecture and issues raised.
